Even as Narendra Modi promised action against Gau Rakshaks and suggested that they shoot him instead of Dalits, protests demanding justice and protection continue.
On Monday morning, Dalits returning from the rally in Una, Gujarat were attacked and many alleged that police in the vicinity had done nothing to stop the non-Dalit groups which led the violence. At least 12 people were injured, one of them shot in the back of his thigh.
A group of Dalits gathered outside a police station in Una to protest against the police’s failure to stop attackers – a fact that has been documented before. The video above is shot by Dalit Camera, a group that focuses on issues concerning “Adivasis and Dalits” through “un-touchable eyes”.
Asked what happened, one of the protesters can be heard saying that a car which was coming from the rally was stopped near Samter village and damaged, while the people inside were beaten. The protests were called for in the aftermath of the incident.
Says another of the protesters, “The police know only how to take bribes. They only want money.” Towards the end of the video, a policeman comes out to calm the crowd down but what he is saying cannot be heard as loud cries of “Jai Bhim” and “Jai Hind” drown his voice.
