The Haryana government has requested the Centre to initiate a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the violence that took place during the Jat reservation protests in February, reported PTI. According to a government official, the state wants the investigators to look into all possible angles surrounding the series of incidents, which included the ransacking of government buildings, an attack on state Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu's house and vandalism.

Captain Abhimanyu, whose house was set on fire when a mob barged into it and allegedly tried to kill his family members, said "the truth needs to come out". Earlier, the minister had called the attack "a political conspiracy" to wipe out his family.

The state saw violent protests from February 18 to 23, during which 30 people were killed and more than 300 were injured. There was extensive damage to property, which resulted in losses worth crores. More than 2,000 police cases related to arson, mob violence and vandalism had been registered.

In June, the state government had set up a two-member inquiry commission comprising Justice SN Jha (retired) and former Indian Police Service officer NC Padhi to receive complaints and investigate the matter. The committee needs to submit its report in December.
