The Haryana government on Thursday announced a cash reward of Rs 2.5 crore and a job for wrestler Sakshi Malik for winning a bronze medal in the ongoing Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, reported PTI. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Malik on Twitter and said she will inspire several sportspersons in the years to come. The Indian Railways, who are Malik's employers, also said they will award her Rs 60 lakh.
The 23-year-old from Rohtak is the fourth woman athlete from India to win an Olympic medal, after weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari, pugilist Mary Kom and shuttler Saina Nehwal. She clinched the bronze, the first medal for India in the Rio Olympics, in the women's freestyle 58 kg category by beating Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.
