Sakshi Malik entered the pre-quarters of the wrestling women's freestyle 58 kg event defeating world No. 2 Johanna Mattsson from Sweden. In the process, Malik scripted history, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a bout at the Olympics.
The 23-year-old from Haryana put up a fantastic fight after trailing 0-4 in the first period. In the second and decisive period, she picked up three points to make it 4-3 and then in the final few seconds, won a crucial two points to win it 5-4.
Malik will fight Moldova's Mariana Esanu Cherdivara in the pre-quarters later in the day.
