In November 2015, many publications reported that NASA was paying a man $18,000 to do nothing other than lie in bed for 70 straight days. The space organisation had 54 other subjects, but according to Andrew Iwanicki's own account he was the last in that group.
The reason for this seeming cash giveaway was, of course, studying the effects of micro gravity on the human body. The bed was tilted back six degrees to let body fluids shift to the upper part of the body, and set off cardiovascular events that are similar to those during space flights.
The video above mentions the research from that experiment, but then gets into a less intimidating home version of it. The outcome of staying in bed all day, every day? Bedsores, loss of body strength, heart and kidney disorders, increased chance of pneumonia, and anxiety, among others. Sleeping in doesn’t sound very appealing now does it?
At the other end of the spectrum, the video below offers a look at what happens if you don't get enough sleep.
