The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar to approach a sessions court with his bail application in a sedition case. The court had earlier granted interim bail to the student leader for six months on March 2.

Justice PS Teji dismissed Kumar’s petition without hearing the matter, telling senior advocate Rebecca John that the JNU student was at liberty to move the case “before the sessions court”. In his bail plea, Kumar stated he had not interfered in the ongoing probe against him, adding that he appeared before the investigating officer in the case whenever he was asked to. He also told the court he had not violated any of the conditions put to him when he was granted interim bail.

Kumar was arrested on February 12 by the Delhi Police after he was accused of taking part in an event on the JNU campus where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised. The high court, while granting him interim bail, had asked him not to take part in any activity that could be described as anti-national. He was also asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and provide a surety from a faculty member at the University. His interim bail expires on September 1.
