America has seen a spate of mass shootings in the past few years. The frequency and spurt in these incidents is bound to seep into pop culture as well. Green Day, among the most popular punk rock bands, has released the video of a track from its upcoming album Revolution Radio.
Bang Bang (video above), is told from the point of view of a mass shooter looking for a version of fame:
"I wanna be a celebrity martyr
The leading man in my own private drama
Hoorah! (Bang bang!) Hoorah! (Bang bang!) The hero of the hour
Daddy’s little psycho and mommy’s little soldier"
Lead singer and writer Billie Joe Armstrong said in an interview to Rolling Stone magazine that the song examines “the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media," adding, “There's this sort of rage happening, but it's also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted."
