India’s badminton player Srikanth Kidambi began his Olympic campaign in the men’s singles group with a straight sets win over Lino Munoz of Mexico. Kidambi is the lone shuttler from India in the men’s singles category and competing in his first Olympics.
Kidambi bagged the first set easily, winning it 21-11. In the second, however, he suffered a lapse of concentration that gave his opponent an opportunity. But the 23-year-old kept his composure and eventually bagged the set and match 21-17. Kidambi's next opponent in his group is Sweden's Henri Hurskainen, whom he will face on August 14. If he wins, he will progress to the round of 16.
Srikanth joined Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu as India's badminton winners in Thursday's matches.
