India’s badminton star Kidambi Srikanth began his Olympic campaign in the men’s singles group stage with a 21-11, 21-17 win over Lino Munoz of Mexico. Srikanth, who is the lone shuttler from India in the men’s singles category, is making his Olympic debut.
In the first set, the Indian gained a healthy lead early on and did not allow his opponent a chance to settle down. He maintained the momentum throughout the first set, eventually winning it 21-11. In the second set, though, Srikanth suffered a drop in his game, which gave the Mexican a chance to stage a comeback. However, Srikanth picked up the pace soon, and won the set 21-17 to close out the match.
Srikanth's next and final opponent in his group is Sweden's Henri Hurskainen, whom he will face on August 14.
