It was yet another disappointing Olympic outing for Shiva Thapa who suffered his second straight first-round exit at the quadrennial games, losing to Cuba's Robeisy Ramirez 0-3 in the the first round of the men's bantam (56 kg) event on Thursday.
The 22-year old from Assam lost by an unanimous 0-3 decision on points and was thoroughly outboxed by Ramirez, who had also previously won the flyweight (52 kg) gold at the 2012 Olympics in London..
Thapa received a score of 25, 27 and 27 from the judges in the three rounds while all three awarded Ramirez a perfect 30 in each of the rounds. He was comprehensively outclassed in the first round and even suffered a cut above his left eye when Ramirez landed a flurry of punches in succession towards the end of the second round.
Although Thapa tried to fight back, the Cuban World No 22 displayed superior technique and wonderful defence to ward off the Indian's punches.
