Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain on Thursday said the Aam Aadmi Party government will soon introduce a ‘Good Samaritan Policy’ in the Cabinet, reported Hindustan Times. The proposed scheme will make provisions for monetary incentives for people who help victims of road accidents.
The announcement came a day after an accident victim was robbed while he bled to death in the Capital. Jain said the government is yet to decide the amount of compensation. The state government will also facilitate citizens to encourage such actions, according to ANI.
Jain said, “People are unwilling to help, mainly because they are scared they will land in trouble or be harassed by the police. But there is a Supreme Court order which states that a person who helps an accident victim will not be questioned or harassed."
As part of the initiative, a team of experts will be set up to provide legal advice to the good Samaritans, and a helpline number will be launched. According to the minister, under the new scheme, licensed auto drivers will also be trained to provide basic life support, and they will be given first-aid kits as well.
