Indian archer Deepika Kumari on Thursday lost her pre-quarterfinal match at the Rio Olympics to Chinese Taipei's Tan Ya-Ting. The 22-year-old World No 12 could not catch up with an in-form Ting, who is ranked No 2. The final score read: 27-29, 26-29, 27-30.
Bombayla Devi, the other Indian player who had made it to the round of 16, also bowed out from the competition, going down 2-6 to Alejandra Valencia from Mexico. Devi, was ranked a lowly 69 against Valencia's 18. She lost the first set, came back to win the second, but could not prevail in the final two. Despite several errors in the last set, Valencia kept her nerve to prevail 28-26, 23-26, 28-27, 25-23.
With the two losses, the Indian women's archery campaign at the Games came to an end. They had earlier lost in the team event as well.
