Germany progressed into the knockout stage of the football event after defeating Fiji by a humongous 10-0 margin in their last group game at the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday. They finished second in Group C, below South Korea and above Mexico and Fiji.
Five of Germany's goals were scored by SC Freiburg's Nils Petersen with Schalke 04's Max Meyer also scoring a hat-trick. Serge Gnabry also scored two goals as Germany ran riot over Fiji. They were motivated by the desire to increase their goal difference and finish top of their group, but it ultimately came to nothing as South Korea defeated Mexico in the other game of the group 1-0 to top the group.
Germany will now play Portugal in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
