A Romanian national accused of stealing Rs 2.5 lakh from an ATM in Thiruvananthapuram was arrested by the Mumbai Police late on Tuesday. Two others were also involved in the crime, which took place in the Vellayambalam locality in July. They are absconding, and the police have sought help from Interpol to find them.
The Kerala Police, who had released photographs and other available details of the trio to officers in other states, are heading to Mumbai to take custody of the Romanian. However, a senior Mumbai police officer said he will first be produced before a court in the city, PTI reported.
In the CCTV footage of the robbery, the three accused can be seen inserting an electronic device into an ATM, the police said. They came to India on tourist visas on June 25 and reached Kerala on July 8. The police have also seized two scooters and three helmets from the hotel where the suspects had rented rooms for two days.
As many as 20 people have lodged complaints of cash being withdrawn from their accounts so far. The police suspect that the electronic device they used to carry out the theft allowed them access to peoples' card numbers and pin codes.
