A fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on every household in Kailashpuri, Bihar, on Tuesday, after district authorities decided to impose a “collective penalty” on the village for violating prohibition laws in the state. According to officials from the Nalanda district, several liquor bottles were found in the village, prompting them to take action against its 50 households. Officials claim that liquor sales continue in the area despite the statewide ban on alcohol imposed by the Nitish Kumar government on April 5.
Collective fines can be imposed on a locality under the Bihar Excise and Prohibition Law. This is the first instance of it being used. The district is also taking action against three hotels that were found to have liquor bottles on their premises, PTI reported. Nalanda is Kumar's home district.
