Tamil Nadu police officials said part of a consignment of Reserve Bank of India money was stolen off a moving train in Salem on Tuesday. The train was carrying 228 trunks with Rs 342 crore in them. Officials have not announced the exact amount stolen, but according to The Times of India, around Rs 5.78 crore is missing. Reports also said a hole was found on the roof of one of the train's coaches, through which the money may have been stolen.
The train left Salem on Monday night and reached Chennai around 4 pm on Tuesday. Many of the boxes were found tampered with, and some reports said the thieves likely entered the train by cutting a hole on top of one of the train coaches. The money had been collected from five Salem banks after the RBI had ordered notes printed before 2005 to be exchanged, PTI reported. Railway police are investigating the case.
