It was a transfer saga that ran through the summer, much like Paul Pogba at neighbouring Manchester United. But unlike Pogba, Manchester City announced the signing of the highly-rated John Stones in slightly comical fashion on Tuesday.

Stones was named part of City's Champions League squad on the official Union of European Football Associations website and handed the number 24 despite not officially being announced as as a City player. Everton also had Stones on their squad sheet in their official website.

Finally, Manchester City confirmed that they had signed the 22-year-old defender from Everton, on a six-year contract. BBC Sport reported that the transfer amount was £47.5 million, which made Stones the second-most expensive defender in the world.

"We want to help John show his quality with us and improve on what he has already achieved," said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, in the club statement.

Stones has been seen as one of the fastest rising English players. Last summer, Chelsea desperately tried to recruit him but balked at the Merseyside club's asking price. Stones had a poor 2015-16 season and didn't make the trip to France with the England side for Euro 2016.

"I'm looking forward to the next stage in my career," said Stones, according to the statement from City. "I know it will be tough getting a place in this team but I'm determined to become the best player I can be and help us to success"
