Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Kalikho Pul, who took over for four months after the political rebellion in the Congress-led state Assembly in December, was found dead on Tuesday. According to NDTV, he hanged himself at the official chief minister's residence, which had not yet moved out of to make way for new CM Pema Khandu.

Pul was sworn in as the state’s chief minister on February 20, leading a group of dissident Congress leaders who had defected against then CM Nabam Tuki two months before. However, the Supreme Court had restored the Congress government in the state on July 13. Following the court's ruling, Pema Khandu was chosen by the party as the new chief minister, with the party saying that Tuki did not have enough support from party legislators.

Arunachal Pradesh was rocked by a major political controversy in December, 2015, when 21 Congress leaders rebelled against Tuki. The Congress had alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre was tring to undermine their rule in the state through Governor Jyoti Rajkhowa. The Centre imposed President's Rule on the state in January, which was called off through the Supreme Court's July order.
