Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra qualified for the final of the men's 10m air rifle event at the Rio Olympics on Monday. The 2008 Olympics gold medalist made it to the final after qualifying in the seventh position. The top eight shooters out of 50 progress to the final. However, it was curtains for the other Indian shooter in the fray, Gagan Narang, who failed to qualify.
Bindra began poorly after recording 104.3 and 104.4 in the first and second series respectively to sit at the 11th position, while Narang was all guns blazing, finishing the second series in the second spot, with 105.3 and 104.5. However, it went all downhill from there for Narang, who dropped to 17th at the end of the third series after scoring a poor 102.1. The 33-year-old went on a free-fall after the fourth series and ended up with a total score of 621.7.
Bindra, on the other hand, went on the ascendancy after the second series. He jumped to second position with a brilliant 105.9 in the third series. The 33-year-old shot 103.8 in the fourth series to drop to fifth, before recording a miserable 102.1 in the fifth and penultimate series to end up outside the top 10 again. However, a 105.2 in the sixth and final series meant he jumped to seventh spot with a total score of 625.7.
