Police in Allahabad have arrested the manager of after he banned the national anthem from being sung. Mohammad Zia-ul Haq was booked under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, officials told PTI. Local administration said they have also issued orders to seal the institution because it was reportedly running illegally. A magisterial inquiry was ordered after it was found that the school has functioned for two decades without clearance from authorities, PTI reported.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had demanded action against the school, and members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Yuva Vahini on Sunday threatened to protest if the institution was not shut down.
Earlier, eight teachers and the school’s principal resigned following the ban on the national anthem. The manager had told The Indian Express that the order was passed after some parents objected to their children singing songs “against their religion”. The school has around 200 Hindu students and 150 Muslim students.
