It looks even worse from the air. Fresh footage has surfaced, providing aerial views shot from a helicopter, which make it apparent that it was a failure of maintenance, compounded by a natural calamity, that led to the collapse of bridge on the Mumbai-Goa highway.
So far, based on complaints received, at least 42 people may have been swept away by the currents of the Savitri River after the Mahad Bridge collapsed on the night of August 2. Earlier, citizen videos had captured scenes from the location in the aftermath of the incident.
Both videos (above and below) have been uploaded to YouTube by a channel named Viral in India. They show crowds still gathered in the area, and the water current remaining strong. This has also prevented state authorities from adequately carrying out search-and-rescue operations.
The video below provides an edited version of events. Even set to music, it gives a 360 degree perspective of the area. The collapsed bridge shot next to the much newer bridge that is standing makes for a haunting visual.
Despite officials warning that the bridge was unsafe to use, the Maharashtra government had issued a certificate of safety in May. Questioning the merits of this certificate, a judicial probe has been ordered into the incident.
