Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar on Monday qualified for the vault finals at the Rio Olympics. This makes her the first Indian to qualify for any apparatus final at the Games, after she had already broken several records to make it there. The vault is Karmakar’s strongest event among the gymnastics four – she did not qualify on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercises. Among the vaulters, Karmakar finished eighth in the qualifying round with a score of 14.850.
The Tripura athlete is only the second woman in the world to successfully land the Produnova, a notoriously dangerous vault that involves completing two front somersaults after a front handspring. She has made this her signature move, and scores the highest of 7 points for difficulty each time she attempts it. This gives her a clear shot at a medal if she manages to execute it cleanly. Several other vaulters start at lower difficulty levels. The gymnastics finals will be held on August 14.
