India’s Dipa Karmakar on Sunday became the first Indian to make the apparatus finals of artistic gymnastics.
Karmakar finished eighth in vaults and 38th overall in the individual all-around event during Sunday’s qualification round. The top eight qualified for the finals, which will be held on August 14. Her average score after four apparatus was 51.665. After the break down, her vault score was 15.100, 11. 666 in uneven bars, 12.866 in balance beam and 12.033 in floor exercise.
She attempted the Produnova vault, which was given a score of 15.1 in her first attempt during the qualifiers. The 22-year-old then attempted a Tsukahara stretched double twist in her second attempt, for which she got a 14.6.
After becoming India’s first female gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial mega event after 52 years, all eyes will be on her when she takes the field during the finals on August 14.
