India’s quest for its first medal at the Rio Olympics will have to wait another day as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu finished second to last in the 48 kg event on Saturday. Chanu failed in all three attempts of clean and jerk, and thus did not have a total score, finishing 11th out of 12 weightlifters.
The 21-year-old started with a failed attempt of a snatch, but then lifted 82kg the second time around. She tried lifting a heavier weight in her third attempt, but could not.
In the clean and jerk category, Chanu failed to lift weights of 104 kg, 106 kg and 106 kg, as she crashed out without a final score. The gold medal was won by Thailand's Sopita Tanasan, who lifted a total of 200 kg. Indonesia's Sri Wahyuni Agustiani took the silver by lifting 192 kg and Japan's Hiromi Miyake got the bronze with 188kg.
