Indian table tennis player Soumyajit Ghosh was knocked out of the men's singles event of the Rio Olympics in the first round itself on Saturday. The 23-year-old lost 8-11, 6-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-13 to Thailand's Padasak Tanviriyavechakul. India's Sharath Kamal also lost his first-round match 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 6-11, 11-13.
Ghosh and Kamal's loss capped a woeful day at the Games for Indian table tennis players. Earlier in the day, Mouma Das lost to Daniel Dodean Monteiro of Romania 11-2 11-7 11-7 11-3 in four rounds in the women's singles. Olympic debutant Manika Batra also lost to 60th-ranked Katarzyna Franc-Grzybowska of Poland 10-12 11-6 14-12 8-11 11-4 14-12 in six rounds.
