Jitu Rai qualified for the final of the men's 10 metre air pistol event after coming in sixth during the qualification stage at the Olympic Shooting Centre on Saturday. However, his compatriot Gurpreet Singh failed to make the cut, finishing 20th.
The 25-year-old made a late burst to secure his spot in the finals. After floundering around the 14th and 15th spots, Rai put in his all in the final sixth series, missing only two shots to end at 98 and a total score of 580. It was a great comeback after he had achieved scores of 96 and 96 in the first two series.
Singh, however, started off poorly with scores of 94, 96 and 93 in the first three rounds. He made a tremendous comeback to get twin scores of 99 in the next two rounds but still could not make it to the top eight, finishing with a total score of 576.
China's Wei Pang, South Korea's Jongoh Jin and Slovakia's Juraj Tuzinsky finished first, second and third respectively. The top eight will participate in the finals later in the day.
