Virginia Thrasher, hailing from the United States, won the first gold medal of the 2016 Olympics, finishing first in the finals of the women's 10 metre air rifle event. Du Li and the 2012 Olympics' gold medallist Yi Siling, both of China, finished second and third, respectively.
The 19-year-old Thrasher notched up a score of 208.0 in the final, setting a new Olympic record, just in front of Li's score of 207 and far ahead of Siling's 185.4. It was a fantastic performance from the American teenager considering she was ranked seventh after qualification.
