Rower Dattu Bhokanal on Saturday qualified for the quarterfinals of the men's singles sculls event at the Rio Olympics, 2016. The 25-year-old clocked a time of 7:21.67 to finish third in Heat 1 of the qualifiers. He is the only Indian rower at the Games.
Thanks to his timing, Bhokanal successfully avoided the repechage round at the first stage, which allows participants who missed qualification by a small margin to make a second attempt. Bhokanal was placed second during the first 500m of the stretch, then suffered a blip between 500m and 1,000m, but eventually recovered to finish third.
Cuba’s Angel Rodriguez Fournier came in first, and Mexico’s Carlos Juan Cabrera finished second in Heat 1.
