The Olympic Games were officially inaugurated in a glittering opening ceremony at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
The event showcased the upbeat nature of Brazilians and celebrated the culture of the country's favelas. It also sent out a clear message regarding the preservation of the environment, incorporating historical elements to provide an insight into how Brazilian society was shaped. The ceremony ended with a spectacular fireworks display.
The interim president of the country Michel Temer presided over the event. The Indian contingent at the Parade of Nations was led by the country's first individual gold medallist at the Games, shooter Abhinav Bindra.
