One of the most popular torrent search engines in the world, torrentz.eu reportedly shut down on Friday, weeks after another well-known site, kickass torrents was taken off the internet. Torrentz.eu was founded in 2003, and had millions of users, who downloaded pirated versions of books, videos, movies and so on through the peer-to-peer file transfer system. On Friday, torrentz.eu put out a message saying, “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell”. There have been no other comments from the site’s owners.
The news comes weeks after Artem Vaulin, the brain behind kickass torrents – arguably the most widely used torrent site of its time – was arrested. Authorities in various countries have been trying to shut down torrent sites in their battle against piracy, only to find that they crop up again under different domain names.
