The Maharashtra government on Friday withdrew its "No Helmet, No Petrol" policy, which was criticised for being unfair to fuel stations. Now, pump operators have been instructed to note down the vehicle registration numbers of two-wheelers ridden by people without helmets and hand over the information to Regional Transport Offices, ANI reported.

The policy announced last month said that pumps would not sell the fuel if the two-wheeler and pillion rider did not wear helmets. Opposition parties, the Petrol Dealers' Association, as well as civic activists had questioned the move. State Transport Minister Diwakar Raote had said earlier that the government's decision was aimed at ensuring road safety and containing the rising number of accidents, according to The Financial Express.
