The Karnataka police have filed a chargesheet against former Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao in a corruption case related to an extortion racket involving his son, reported PTI. The case came to light when former anti-grant ombudsman flagged a complaint filed by an executive engineer who alleged that someone from the anti-graft office demanded Rs one crore to avoid a raid. Rao is the seventh accused in the case, while his son, Y Ashwin is the first.
Rao has been booked for abetting illegal gratification to influence a public servant, concealing evidence and being part of a criminal conspiracy to cover up and protect the offenders. A special investigation team was recently set up to look into the case. Ashwin was arrested for his role in the scandal in July 2015. The former high court chief justice resigned from his post as Lokayukta in December 2015. Rao is the first Lokayukta in the country to be booked on corruption charges.
