Argentina began their Olympic football campaign in disastrous fashion as they were beaten 2-0 by Portugal in the Group D opener on Thursday. This was their first loss in an Olympic match since 1996. They were unbeaten in 12 games.
With the first half yielding no goals, Portugal broke the drought in the 66th minute owing to the heroics of Goncalo Paciencia. Soon after, Portugal gained the upper-hand and made sure that they did not lose their grip. In the 84th minute, Pite made it 2-0 leaving Argentina shell-shocked.
In the opening match of Group D, Honduras edged Algeria 3-2. Romell Quioto struck first for Honduras followed by defender Marcelo Pereira's header for the 2-0 advantage. However, Algeria’s Sofiane Bendekba got one back in the second half. But, Honduras would strike again with Anthony Lozano netting the third. However, Algeria continued their fightback with Baghdad Bounedjah scoring the second which was a little too late.
Group D features Portugal in the top spot, Honduras in second, Algeria third and Argentina in fourth.
