Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday visited the victims of a recent attack in Una and heavily criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state. She also announced compensation of Rs two lakh to the victims’ families, The Times of India reported. Mayawati had earlier said the prime minister’s unwillingness to talk about the incident, in which four Dalits were assaulted for skinning a dead cow, showed that his party did not stand with the community.
She also warned the BJP and its ideological mentor the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to “stop committing atrocities against Dalits as they are not going to tolerate it anymore”, PTI reported. The Uttar Pradesh leader also claimed the BJP had attempted to keep her from visiting the city, by instigating one of its party members to use derogatory language about her and by seeking Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s resignation.
