Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook’s first official visit to India, after succeeding Steve Jobs in 2011, was bound to be a talking point – for mainstream as well as social media.
Cook started the tour on Wednesday with a pre-dawn visit to Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Temple, where he met Anant Ambani, son of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.
Before his arrival, Apple had announced that it will open a “new iOS app design and development accelerator in Bengaluru by early 2017”. This is a major step “towards Apple’s attempt to expands its share in the world’s fastest-growing smartphone market”, said Mashable. Cook’s visit comes at a time when the company has been hit by slower growth in global sales of its flagship products – iPhone, iPad and Mac.
According to NDTV, Cook will unveil a development center for digital maps when he visits Hyderabad. FactorDaily reported that the maker of iPhones will also set up three retail stores – the iconic Apple Store – in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai over the next 18 months.
It is believed that Cook will meet Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Bharti Airtel CEO Sunil Mittal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vodafone India CEO Sunil Sood and Reliance Jio executives on his trip.
Twitter too took interest in Cook’s tour but purely for reasons of humour:
