FILM Urban Lens 2016 at the Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan
The third edition of this festival organised by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements will feature screenings primarily of non-fiction Indian and international films about cities. The programme on Friday will include British filmmaker Jake Witzenfeld’s 2015 groundbreaking documentary Oriented that follows the lives of gay Palestinians in Tel Aviv and Mira Nair’s 1985 documentary India Cabaret that explores stereotypes of women in Indian society from the point of view of two bar dancers in Mumbai. Saturday’s roster features Rahul Roy’s 2015 film The Factory about the 147 workers of Maruti Suzuki who are on trial for the murder of their senior manager. ART Threads of Continuity: Zoroastrian Life and Culture at the National Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art
The Ministry of Minority Affairs will present three exhibitions on the history, culture and impact of the Parsi community in India. An exhibition on Zoroastrianism at the National Museum will take visitors through the emergence of the religion in Iran through its travel to the west coast of India. Painted Encounters: Parsi Traders and the Community at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is an exhibition of engravings, paintings, and photographs that traces how Parsi ship builders and businessmen established bustling trade with Canton in the nineteenth century. No Parsi is an Island, also at the NGMA, is a retrospective of the works of 14 Parsi artists, like Pestonji Bomanji and Gieve Patel, over the last 150 years. Entry to the NGMA is free. The first is a series of images taken at the Botanical Garden of Oaxaca in 1998 and 1999; the second is on the bathroom of the artist Frida Kahlo. Iturbide was one of the first people to enter the bathroom when it was unsealed 50 years after the death of Kahlo in 1954. See the Facebook event page for more information.
