In the age of downloadable books and electronic printing technologies, it's hard to imagine that this is how books used to be made in the none-too-distant past.
Today, the book-making chain – from writer's manuscript to the edited version passing through the editor's hands, and then to the making of the plates from which the words will be printed on the paper, and even the cutting and binding – is almost entirely digital. But this form of bookmaking has lasted only a very short time compared to the old-fashioned way of doing it, which lasted centuries.
That way, for all intents and purposes, is only a memory now. Let's not forget it altogether.
