Bharatiya Janata Party might want to play the victim, if one goes by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's claims, but the party certainly has more than just a public relations problem at hand if people from all quarters are rising in protest against “rising intolerance” in the country. At a time when noted writers and film-makers are returning their national award in an act of defiance and historians are issuing statements of condemnation against the ruling government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, newspaper op-eds are spilling ink every day to nuance the debate just a bit more.

Newspaper cartoonists, meanwhile, have found their pens to be mightier than the award. Over the past two weeks, multiple cartoons appearing in major national dailies have pointed fingers at the government for not acting upon incidents such as the Dadri lynching where a man was killed by a mob on the suspicion of storing beef in his refrigerator and rogue statements given by its ministers and associates.

While some cartoonists chose to pull up politicians for playing the caste and communal cards, others questioned the political blame game that ensued in the backdrop of Bihar elections.
