Bihar: It's a beef battle, says Sushil Modi
Attacking the remark of Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad that “Hindus too eat beef”, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Monday promised to frame a legislation to ban cow slaughter in Bihar if the National Democratic Alliance comes to power in the Assembly elections. Modi said that the Bihar poll will be a "direct contest between those who justify beef eating and those seeking [an] effective ban on cow slaughter". He added that the NDA government at the Centre has saved lakhs of cows from slaughter by preventing animal smuggling to neighbouring countries.
Uttar Pradesh: Separate police stations for SC/STs being considered
With Uttar Pradesh experiencing high rates of crime against members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the state government is considering a proposal to set up separate police stations to deal with such cases. Such police stations already exist in Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, reports said. The Uttar Pradesh government plans to set up at least one such police station in every district.
New Delhi: SC denies bail to Somnath Bharti
The Supreme Court denied bail to Aam Aadmi Party MLA and former Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti after his estranged wife Lipika Mitra refused to opt for mediation in a domestic abuse case. The Supreme Court directed Bharti to move his bail petition to the trial court.
Tamil Nadu: PIL says senior cops abused minor girl
A PIL filed in the Madras High Court on behalf of a trafficked and sexually abused minor girl has made an explosive claim that several senior police officers have been abusing her and are now preventing an investigation into the matter. The victim had recorded her statement with a judicial magistrate and mentioned several names of people who had abused her, the PIL said. Two kingpins in the case were an inspector of police at the office of Inspector General (south zone) and a sub-inspector of police at Sivaganga town police station, it said.
Maharashtra: Mukherjea may return to jail in a few days
Indrani Mukherjea, prime accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, is conscious after an alleged suicide attempt, and may be shifted back to jail in couple of days, officials said. On Monday, a Mumbai court extended the judicial custody of Mukherjea and her two co-accused until October 19.
