PM says poverty eradication should be top priority
In his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there is an urgent need to reform the United Nations Security Council to give it teeth and make it more credible. Modi was speaking at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit. He said eradicating poverty, empowering women and tackling climate change should be the top goals of all nations.

Police say Bharti backed by criminals
The New Delhi police said on Friday that professional criminals are helping Aam Aadmi Party legislator Somnath Bharti evade arrest in a case of domestic violence registered by his wife. An officer alleged that Bharti had been behaving like a professional criminal – using around a dozen different mobile phones, and changing locations. Investigators claimed that early on Friday his mobile phone location showed him moving away from Uttar Pradesh towards Haryana, but by evening he appeared to be in Delhi and National Capital Region.

Congress alleges Rs 45,000-crore mining scam in Rajasthan
The Congress on Friday alleged that a scam in the allocation of mines in Rajasthan had cost the exchequer Rs 45,000 crore and demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. It also demanded a Supreme Court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the matter. Congress claimed that Raje had allotted 653 mines in contravention of Centre’s policy.

1,750 kg of explosives recovered from Bastar
The recovery of over 1,750 kg of explosives in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh on Friday stunned intelligence agencies and security forces. Officials suspect that the Naxalites in the area had planned to smuggle the material to poll-bound Bihar.

Inquiry to find out if Volkswagen cheated on tests in India
An investigation has been launched to find out if the German auto major Volkswagen manipulated emission tests in India as it did in the United States. The Automotive Research Association of India has started the investigation on a request from the ministry of heavy industries. Volkswagen has admitted that 11 million diesel engine cars worldwide were fitted with the software that helped rig emission tests.
