Jammu & Kashmir: Ban comes amid beef controversy
Jammu and Kashmir will celebrate Eid without Internet services. The state government has ordered data services to be suspended from Friday morning to till Saturday night because it fears that the spread of rumours could create communal tensions. The directive by the police to all service providers comes amid the controversy over a ban on slaughtering cattle. Until last year, sacrificing cattle was a common practice on Eid-al-Adha. The internet ban has been imposed to ensure that no videos can be uploaded and that social networking sites remain inaccessible.
Bihar: Sonia to campaign in Bihar on October 3
Congress president Sonia Gandhi will visit Bihar on October 3 to campaign for the high-stakes Assembly poll in the state, the first phase of which will be held on October 12, a party leader said in Patna on Thursday. Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashok Chaudhary said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders will also campaign for party candidates in all five phases of the Assembly polls.
Tamil Nadu: Magazine asked to apologise
An online petition demanding the apology of Tamil biweekly publication, Kumudam Reporter, has received an overwhelming response from net users. The latest issue of Kumudam Reporter carried a cover story criticising women wearing leggings titled, "Vulgarity with leggings: Youth crossing the line." This has created outrage online and several activists and politicians have demanded an apology from the biweekly for the story. The petition, which was started on Wednesday, has gained more than 6,000 supporters so far.
Madhya Pradesh: CBI conducts raids in connection with Vyapam scam
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday raided around 40 locations in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in connection with the Vyapam scam. The CBI has so far registered 83 FIRs and launched 12 preliminary inquiries into the scam, which involves bribes being paid for seats in educational institutions and for government jobs. So far, approximately 40 people associated with the scam have died.

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Centre and Delhi government on the increasing dengue cases in the national capital. The NHRC has observed that despite instructions of the Delhi government, private hospitals denied admission to two children with the illness. They died soon after. The NHRC has asked the Health Ministry secretary and Delhi government to submit their reports in two weeks.
