Bombay HC declines interim relief
The Bombay High Court on Monday refused to grant interim stay on the ban on the slaughter of bulls and sale of beef during the festival of Bakri Eid. A division bench of justices AS Oka and VL Achliya, hearing a batch of petitions seeking relaxation on the ban from September 25 to 27, declined to grant any interim relief to the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act by which the ban was imposed. The court refused to accept the petitioners’ contention that the slaughter of animals forms an essential part of the Muslim community’s religious practice.
Draconian data encryption policy planned
The government has drafted a new encryption policy that will allow it to have access to all encrypted information, including a citizen’s personal email, text messages or data stored in a private business server. The draft policy requires users to save all encrypted communication data for at least 90 days. The government would also ask users to give up their encryption keys. The draft cites "concerns of national security" to justify its proposals.
JD(U) slams RSS chief
The Janata Dal (United) on Monday criticised Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat for suggesting a review of the policy reserving seats in educational institutions and government job for people from historically marginal groups. In a statement, JD(U) general secretary KC Tyagi said Bhagwat’s remarks amount to interference and is an attempt to weaken backward communities. Bhagwat on Sunday said that reservation policies have been used for political ends and suggested that an apolitical committee should be established to examine who needs these benefits and for how long. The Bharatiya Janata Party has distanced itself from Bhagwat’s remarks.
CBI to question Mayawati in health scam
Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati may be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with alleged corruption in the centrally funded National Rural Health Mission, news reports said on Monday. After filing 74 FIRs and 48 chargesheets in the scam, the agency has decided to examine Mayawati “to unearth larger conspiracy in the scam”. Between 2010 and 2012, six people who reportedly agreed to provide information about the case were shot dead or murdered in mysterious circumstances.
Ex-minister seeks summons for Manmohan in coal scam case
Former minister of state for coal, Dasari Narayan Rao, on Monday demanded that Manmohan Singh be summoned in the coal scam case. He claimed in a special court that the office of the Prime Minister had made the irregular allotment of the Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in Jharkhand to the Naveen Jindal group a coal block. Singh was also holding charge as coal minister at that time.
