Maharashtra: Police use phone details to make arrest
The police arrested a man at Sangli in Maharashtra on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Communist Party of India leader Govind Pansare, who was shot by unidentified assailants in February. Sameer Vishnu Gaikwad, a member of Sanatan Sanstha, was nabbed during a joint operation by policemen from Sangli and Kolhapur. He was picked up after police tracked details of his mobile phone records, officials said. "While we are trying to ascertain certain evidence, we don't want to claim that with Gaikwad's arrest, we have cracked the Pansare murder case,” said Sanjay Kumar, chief of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Karnataka: State revokes meat ban
Karnataka’s Congress-led government on Wednesday revoked a ban on the sale of meat to mark Ganesh Chaturthi amid an outpouring of criticism across the country over similar prohibitions in about half a dozen Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states. The sale of meat on Ganesh Chaturthi became taboo in the state after the BJP came to power in 2007. The Karnataka government’s announcement came on a day it emerged that a Hindutva organisation had asked West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to ban the slaughter, transportation and sale of beef between October 19 and 22, the four days of Durga Puja, the state’s biggest religious celebration.

West Bengal: Congress MLA Bhuniya on hunger strike
State Congress leaders led by West Midnapore MLA Manas Bhuniya, started a hunger strike on Wednesday near the Gandhi statue on Kolkata’s Mayo Road to protest against the killing of Chhatra Parishad activist Krishna Prasad Jana at Sabang college in the district last month. On August 7, Jana, a third-year BA student of Sabang Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya, was lynched during a clash between Congress students’ wing and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad at the college campus over claiming the students’ union room.

Andhra Pradesh: Rivers Godavari and Krishna formally linked
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday interlinked the waters of the Rivers Godavari and Krishna at the Ibrahimpatnam Ferry village, which is located about 20-kilometers from Vijayawada. The linking of these two major rivers will allow about 80 thousand million cubic feet of the 3,000 thousand million cubic feet  of Godavari water that goes into the sea every year to be used to irrigate the often drought-hit delta region of River Krishna.

Delhi: ED urged to ban Modi's ‘Mann ki Baat’
The Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United) on Wednesday petitioned the Election Commission to ban the telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann ki Baat radio show. The programme violated the model code of conduct that came into force on September 9 with the announcement of Bihar elections, they said.
