Himachal Pradesh: Train derailed due to over-speeding, experts say
Two British nationals were killed and 13 were injured after three carriages of the toy train travelling on the Kalka-Shimla route in Himachal Pradesh derailed on Saturday afternoon. Officials said that the train, which derailed between the Kalka and Taksal stations, had been chartered by a historian from Shimla as well as a group of 37 British citizens. A senior Northern Railway official said that two of the passengers were seriously injured. Experts said that the train likely derailed due to over-speeding.
Bihar: Owaisi says AIMIM will contest polls
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the party would contest the Bihar elections, but only in from the state's Seemanchal region. The party had made the decision “in the interest and justice” of the region, he said, adding that it was being “realistic” about its chances of winning. Holding the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar responsible for the underdevelopment of Seemanchal, Owaisi said that the AIMIM would not tie-up with any other party for the elections.
West Bengal: GJM MLAs to resign from assembly
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on Saturday said that its three MLAs in the West Bengal assembly would resign from their seats on September 23 to protest against the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government in the state. GJM General-Secretary Roshan Giri accused the TMC government was of not cooperating with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration in the state.
Delhi: State to introduce women’s rights bill
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said that the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state would introduce a bill on women’s rights during the next assembly session. Apart from granting more powers to the Delhi Commission for Women, Kerjiwal said that the proposed Charter of Women’s Rights Bill would incorporate the recommendations made by the Justice Verma Committee, which was set up in the wake of the gangrape and murder of a medical student in 2012. “We need to provide a system where women can roam freely around the city,” Kejriwal said.
Jammu and Kashmir: LeT militant killed in encounter
A top militant from the Laskhar-e-Taiba was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Officials said that the militant, Irshad Ganie, was wanted in connection with the killing of eight soldiers in Hyderpora in 2013. The officials said that the encounter broke out at the Begum Bagh village in the district after police forces received a tip-off from an informer. The army was called in after Irshad received support from other militants in the area.
