The army's northern command GOC on Monday confirmed that six soldiers were awarded life sentences by a general court martial in the 2012 Machil fake encounter case. "General Officer Commanding in Chief, Northern Command, Lieutenant General D S Hooda has confirmed the sentence of a Summary General Court Martial in the Machil encounter case," said Colonel S.D. Goswami, spokesman of the army's Udhampur-based Northern Command. In April 2012, the army had claimed killing three guerrillas in Machil sector on the Line of Control in Kupwara district during an infiltration bid.
Karnataka: State wants CBI to probe Kalburgi murder
Karnataka government on Monday recommended a CBI investigation into the recent murder of Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi in Dharwad. Home Minister K J George said the police's criminal investigation department was doing a good job of inquiring into the case and its officials were certain about finding the culprits. However, the government had no problem with CBI investigating the case. Kalburgi was shot dead by two unidentified men in his home on August 30.
Kerala: Civic polls in in November
Kerala State Election Commission announced on Sunday that local body elections will be held in November. The polls will be held in a single phase. State Election Commissioner K Sasidharan Nair said that date for the polls would be decided after completing other related processes. After cases were filed in the state high court challenging a government order forming 69 gram panchayats, 34 municipalities and Kannur Corporation, questions had been raised about whether the elections could be held on time. "The commission wanted to hold polls as early as possible in November and new governing bodies are likely to take charge by December 1," Nair added.
Maharashtra: Police probing Mukerjeas' property deals
Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria said on Sunday that DNA reports have proved that Indrani Mukerjea is the biological mother of Sheena Bora. He added that a team of forensic auditors, chartered accountants, IT consultants and economic offence wing officers is the companies, investments, properties belonging to Mukerjeas, not only in India but also in UK and Spain.

The Assam government has sought Rs. 650 crores from the Centre as interim flood relief on Monday. Floods have completely ravaged over 2,000 villages in the state and nearly two lakh people have taken shelter in relief camps and 352 villages have been submerged in Barpeta District. State Disaster Management Authority CEO P K Tiwari said that the detailed report on flood related damages will be submitted after assessing the situation on ground.
