The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Friday described the migrant crisis in Europe as an absolutely dramatic situation and called on the European Union to take charge of migrant processing centers. Commissioner Antonio Guterres said the refugee crisis was a defining moment for the European Union. UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said that the crisis has exposed differences in attitudes and policies of the EU member countries. She called for processing centers to be established under the auspices of the UN and the International Organisation for Migration.
UAE soldiers killed by blasts at camp
Twenty two soldiers from the United Arab Emirates were killed in Yemen while fighting Houthi rebels as part of a Saudi-led coalition, according to reports on Friday. Yemeni military sources said they died in explosions triggered accidentally by a fire at an ammunition store, but the rebels say a rocket caused the blasts. Bahrain said five of its soldiers were killed while protecting Saudi Arabia's frontier with Yemen. It did not say how the troops died.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia met President Barack Obama in Washington on Friday. It was his first trip to the United States since assuming the throne in January. Salman reiterated the concern of Gulf states about the recent deal on Iran's nuclear programme. They fear that lifting sanctions could allow Iran to extend its support for militant groups and actions across the region they consider destabilising. Obama pressed King Salman to ensure humanitarian organisations are given unrestricted access to Yemen, where the Saudis are leading a coalition against the Houthi rebel movement.
Pakistan spends $1.9 billion on Taliban offensive
Pakistan has spent $1.9 billion on the major operation against the militants in North Waziristan tribal region, officials said on Friday. The comments came a day after a parliamentary committee was informed that more than 3,500 terrorists have been killed and nearly 300 security personnel have lost lives during the operation launched in June last year. The Pakistani Taliban, other Pakistani armed groups and foreign militants had turned North Waziristan as their major operational base for attacks in Pakistan and also across the border into Afghanistan.
