NGO says determined to fight order
The government on Thursday cancelled registration of Greenpeace India under the Foreign Contribution Regulations Act claiming that its activities had hampered the country’s economic growth. This means that the NGO will not be able to receive funds from abroad. These constitute upto 30% of its overall cost of operations. The Union Home Ministry told the Delhi High Court that it had cancelled the registration because Greenpeace India was continuing to use its FCRA accounts even though these had been suspended.
Security to over 30 VIPs withdrawn
Eight family members of former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, two former Chief Justices of India are among the 30 VIPs whose security cover was withdrawn by government on Thursday. Former Telecom Minister A Raja, who is also an accused in the 2G scam, former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha and NHRC chairperson KG Balakrishnan names also figure in the list of people whose security status was downgraded.
SIT recommends steps to curb money laundering
The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team on black money on Thursday recommended several strategies to curb money laundering. It has advocated a cap on huge cash transactions as these mostly take place in illegal activities like drug trade and betting deals. A specific recommendation has been made to check generation of black money through cricket betting.
Solution to all problems lies in dialogue, says Modi
Ideologies that close the gates on dialogue have a propensity for violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday. Stressing on the need for ideologies to give way to dialogue for conflict-resolution, Modi said, “Hindu and Buddhist religions are in that sense more philosophies and not just belief systems. It is my firm belief that the solution to all problems lies in dialogue.”
’Pakistan agreed not to go to UNSC on Kashmir’
In May 2000, Pervez Musharraf regime in Pakistan had told the US that it would not push for a UN Security Council resolution on Kashmir, acknowledging that this would not be helpful in reaching an agreement with India on the issue. These reports surfaced on Thursday from US diplomatic cables sent to Pakistan.
