The Samajwadi Party has decided to fight the state Assembly elections alone and pulled out of its alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United) on Thursday. Hindutva activist Prasad Attavar was arrested by the police in the coastal Karnataka region of Mangaluru on Thursday for making provocative comments on social media regarding the killing of Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi in Dharwad on August 30. Mangaluru police commissioner S Murugan said the police filed a suo moto case against Attavara following an allegedly provocative Facebook post about Kalburgi on Thursday. Attavar has been booked for promoting enmity and criminal intimidation.
Assam: Flood toll reaches 31
Assam's flood situation continued to be alarming on Thursday, even as the deluge claimed two more lives, taking the toll to 31. Around 14 lakh people in 19 districts have been affected by the floods. The army has been called by Dibrugarh administration to help rescue the marooned people and for relief operations.
Tamil Nadu: 42 injured in train accident
At least 42 people were injured as six coaches of the Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed in Tamil Nadu early on Friday morning. There were no immediate reports of fatalities. The accident occurred near Virudhachalam, about 230 km south of Chennai. The injured were given first aid at the Virudhachalam government hospital, railway officials said. Special buses were organised for passengers travelling to Trichy and Salem.
