Assam: 85,000 people are in relief camps
The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday, with nearly 10 lakh people being swamped.  At least four people have been killed in the floods. Unofficial reports put the toll at seven. The Brahmaputra continued to flow above the red mark all along its 900-km length from Sadiya to Dhubri, inundating fresh areas. Over 1.75 lakh people have been lodged in 74 relief camps.

Mumbai: Peter Mukherjea records statement
Former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea's statement relating to the death of his step-daughter Sheena Bora was recorded by the Mumbai police on Wednesday. They interrogated all three suspects in Peter Mukherjea's presence and cross-questioned him. They also raided the Kolkata home of Sanjeev Khanna, the ex-husband of Peter Mukherjea's wife Indrani Mukerjea. Documents related to his three bank accounts. Officials believe the crime was financially motivated and are certain the bank details will establish the money trail that enabled Khanna to purchase a palatial building in a Kolkata suburb and a stake in a plush restaurant in the heart of the city.

New Delhi: Five jailed in 2010 Commonwealth Scam
Five people have been sent to prison on Wednesday after being convicted for involvement in 2010 Commonwealth scam. Four civic officials were sent to jail for four years and the managing director of a private firm, Sweka Power Tech Engineers, TP Singh, has been sentenced to six years by a Delhi court. The convicts had asked for a lenient sentence, arguing that they had spent around 11 months in jail during the trial. According to a Central Bureau of Investigation chargesheet in 2011, the convicts entered into a criminal conspiracy to upgrade street lights for the Commonwealth Games in October 2010 and awarded the contract to a private firm by manipulating tender documents.

Manipur: Tension prevails in Churachandpur
Tension prevailed in Manipur on Wednesday with a government building being torched in Churachandpur district despite curfew. The government clarified that the three bills passed by the assembly do not infringe on the existing rights of the tribal community. Protestors set ablaze the Zonal Education Office in even as the indefinite curfew continued for the third day. Violence has claimed eight lives since Monday.

Haryana: Officials take stock ahead of PM's visit
Haryana Education minister Ram Bilas Sharma on Wednesday visited Faridabad to take stock of the preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit scheduled for September 6.  Sharma said that the Prime Minister would inaugurate the DMRC's newly laid ITO-Badarpur corridor extension. "The government will do everything needed to restore the lost prestige of the city in the last 15 years," he said.
