Ajit Doval to be briefed on Pakistan militant’s interrogation
Ahead of the NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan, NIA chief Sharad Kumar will brief National Security Advisor AK Doval on the progress made in interrogating alleged Pakistani militant Mohammed Naved Yakub. Kumar flew down to Srinagar on Thursday to review the interrogation reports of Naved, who was captured by locals after the terror strike on a BSF bus at Udhampur in Jammu that killed two personnel of the border guarding force. "Kumar briefed the Governor about the working of NIA, which has been established as the Central Counter Terrorism Law Enforcement Agency of Government of India, and about the up-to-date status of the investigation in the recent Udhampur terror attack," a spokesman for the Raj Bhawan said. Meanwhile, Doval met Home Minister Rajnath Singh after it became clear that Sartaz Aziz will meet Kashmiri separatist leaders during his visit to New Delhi on 23 August.
CBI investigates Shanti Express coach burning case
The Central Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe of Shanti Express coach burning incident of 2004 and inspected the train at the Gandhinagar railway station on Thursday. According to reports, a coach of Shanti Express caught fire after the train arrived and no one was hurt as all the passengers had alighted. But the police probe made no headway. The UC Banerjee Commission, appointed by the then Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to probe Godhra train burning incident of 2002, had also inspected Shanti Express. The Gujarat High Court later dissolved the Commission. In May this year, Gujarat government decided to hand over the case to CBI.
BJP wins Rajasthan municipal polls
Rajasthan’s ruling party BJP has managed to continue its political dominance by winning the municipal polls on Thursday. Of the 187 municipal bodies in the state, 129 went to the polls on August 17. Of the 113 results announced on Thursday, BJP won 62, leaving the Congress with 25. Independents won 17 while nine had hung assemblies. BJP also won the Ajmer municipal corporation, cornering 31 out of 60 seats, while the Congress won 22 followed by seven Independents. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, however, suffered an embarrassment on her home turf and son Dushyant Singh’s parliamentary constituency Jhalawar, with the Congress winning most seats there.
Lalit Modi documents sent to Interpol by CBI
The Central Bureau of Investigation has sent documents related to former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi to Interpol for issuance of a Red Corner Notice. Modi is being probed for alleged money laundering in conduct of the T-20 cricket tournament “All necessary documents in the case being probed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been sent to the Interpol for issuance of the notice,” official sources said. The ED has sought Interpol’s help as domestic legal options available to it for serving its summons to Modi issued under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) failed.
Chandrababu Naidu cancels meeting with Narendra Modi
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has cancelled his proposed Delhi visit after his scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was deferred to last week of this month. "There was a scheduling problem. The PMO asked us to choose from August 25, August 28, August 29 or August 31 for the meeting. His tour to Delhi stands cancelled for now," Parakala Prabhakar, Advisor to the Andhra Pradesh Government said. Prior to this, Naidu had stated that he would meet Modi on August 25 to discuss the issue of special status and other promises made to the state during bifurcation process last year.
